In 2014, the UK government recognised the enormous risk posed by cyber attacks to organisations working with their departments as suppliers or partners. They also realised that the majority of these risks could be avoided by following a set of basic security measures. In response, they launched the Cyber Essentials scheme.
At present, Cyber Essentials is not a requirement for all education providers, however there are plenty of reasons why it is a worthwhile investment no matter what part of the education sector you work in. Scarce resources, increasing access to online teaching resources, and more use of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in schools and colleges, mean that educational organisations are particularly vulnerable to cyber criminals.

In May 2020, Microsot Secruity Intelligence found that 61% of nearly 7.7 million malware incidents came from the education sector, making it the most attacked industry in the world. Studies also show that it is one of the least protected. The education sector represents a huge pool of sensitive data and this, couple with weaker defences, makes schools and college a prime target for cyber criminals.
